When To Hire an IT Consultant

Small business owners are known as do-it-yourselfers, with the ability to learn new things, make good decisions, and to save money. Along with this, sometimes they also know when hiring help is less expensive than fixing a do-it-yourself project that has gone bad. Information Systems and Technology is a gray area for many business owners. Since everyone has a computer, it is often thought that someone in the office is an "expert". This thought process has cost many a business large amounts of data loss, down-time and money.

So, when should you hire an IT Consultant? Indicators that an IT project is best left to a qualified technician are how much time will be diverted from actual business tasks like sales, marketing, management, and business growth, the complexity of the project and the potential damage if the project is completed incorrectly, late or not at all. Examples of these kinds of projects are installing and configuring a business class file/print or mail server on a network with broadband internet, a reliable data backup system, or a Firewall and VPN. All of these projects present the potential for data loss, business downtime and significant time drains for planning and implementation. They can also introduce opportunities for hackers and malicious viruses or spyware to steal important information.

Just as your customers are best served by hiring you, you are best served by hiring a good IT Consultant.
